Vintage report

A good, classic vintage, although not of the calibre of a vintage such as 2002. There were high yields given the much reduced crop in 2003, which are a cause for concern. Some producers will have made dilute wines, but the wines I tasted, for the most part, showed ripened fruit of good concentration and balance.

Weather
October 2003 was rainy and cold, followed by mild weather and a lack of rain in November and December. In January it rained and February, which was mild to start, finished with frosts. March was dry and cool and April more rainy than normal with hail on the 29 th and 30 th . Fortunately there was no real frost. April saw normal monthly rainfall, but concentrated over four days and there were a few days of zero degrees centigrade. June was dry with temperatures up and down (just 4 degrees on the 20 th ). July was humid, and although temperatures warmed up towards the end of the month there was a general lack of sunshine. This continued in August when it rained a great deal, depending on location. Some growers remarked on the humidity and grey rot. Stéphane Moreau comments that it rained for all of August with the exception of three days. The poor August was followed by three warm weeks in September which saved the day and ripened the fruit sufficiently.

Style of the wine
Bessin, voices the opinion of the majority, describing it as "typical Chablis." Several producers assess the character of the vintage as somewhere between 2000 and 2002. Laurent Pinson for example considers that it is like 2000, but with more fruit. Tastings reveal that it does not have the plump, sleek fruit of 2002. It is leaner, more appley and the acidity is not as juicy. However it seems firmer in acidity than the 2000, but not as broad.
